The monastery rises above the gorge near the Kasakh River, from the shore of which a wonderful view of the monastery opens. After that we continue our journey in the direction of Hovhannavank. The monastery was built in the 12th century from orange and black tuff, a type of limestone common in Armenian architecture, which gives it a striking checkered pattern. What makes this church so impressive, apart from its age, is its location. The monastery stands on the edge of the Kasagh Canyon, a long and wide gorge cut by the Kasag River. The final destianation of a day will be Tsaghkevank. Tsaghkevank or St Varvara's chaptle is a church in the cave on the Ara mountain of Armenia. Local residents celebrate there both Christian and pagan holidays.
